Plus dancing with Rounds – Tuesdays 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Caller: Steve Edlund
A sample of Steve’s Gordon Lightfoot cover.
Steve began square dancing as a teenager with the rest of the neighbourhood kids as they joined their parents at the Surrey Square Wheelers. He tried calling at a Goofers’ Night, and the rest, as they say, is history. As a member of the Wesburn Wranglers he won the Senior Champion at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival.
It is a particular pleasure to have later called for the Wesburn Wranglers for 18 years, as well as the Abbotsford Swinging Hubs, Lochdale, and Silver Saddles Square Dance Clubs. Presently Steve is still calling for the Royal Swingers (as he has for over 35 years) as well as the Surrey Square Wheelers, and the Abbotsford Swinging Hubs.
Square dancing has brought many opportunities to Steve and he has had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout North America, Sweden, and Japan. He has also called in San Jose, Costa Rica and Oslo, Norway. Currently, Steve is on the staff of Elite Records, based in Houston, Texas. Steve has been calling for over 35 years and wouldn’t change a thing.
Steve lives in Surrey, British Columbia with his wife, Lynnette. Steve loves hockey, and has spent a number of years helping and coaching his daughter Kristen’s hockey team, and appreciates the opportunity to play hockey with her during the summer. Steve also enjoys golfing, bike riding and kayaking with the whole family.
Cuer: Krista Baird
A Sample from Krista’s latest recording
Krista ( Fergusson) Baird came from a square dance family. Her parents, Otway and Cora, danced with Chuck Jordan at Swinging Singles since before she was born, in fact that’s where they met; her siblings, Suzette and Andrew, danced with Wesburn Wranglers through their teen years as well. Krista started dancing in 1989 with the Wesburn Wranglers at the age of five. From then to the age of 21, she competed in every available division offered at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival.
Krista began learning how to call in 1997 under the direction of Steve Edlund (that might explain some things). Finding she liked calling the most, she competed at every level throughout her remaining eight years; with a highlight of winning senior champion four times.
In 2004 she was getting close to aging out of Teen dancing, a dreaded time in most teen competitor minds, so she started to learn the higher phases of round dancing.
In 2005, Surrey Square Wheelers was looking for a caller to replace Brenda Juhala who planned to retire from calling and teaching the mainstream evening. At Steve Edlund’s recommendation, and her mother’s persuasion, Krista decided to give it a try and hasn’t left since.
Wesburn Wranglers and Surrey Square Wheelers are families to Krista and she truly loves to teach others.
